Educational Philosophy

Posted by degan22 on June 25, 2008

My educational philosophy centers on the fact that children have a purpose in life and that a teacher’s role is to help them discover that special place.  I believe that all children can learn and that they should be given the opportunity to succeed.  Every child is incredibly different and that individuality is what makes teaching so challenging, yet fascinating and rewarding.  Each child’s ability to learn is a puzzle, the solution to which, I will constantly be seeking.

As a teacher, my classroom will be based on the responsive learning environment.  I am a firm believer in teaching social skills as an integral of any educational plan.  The basis of social skills instruction is the ability of students to understand the parameters of acceptable behavior, both social and academic.  Understanding their responsibilities to others, children can work independently to solve educational and relationship problems.  In my classroom, students will experience a pedagogic approach, which encourages inquiry, enhances interest in subject matter, and teaches responsibility for the school environment.

My core beliefs about education include:

o   Devotion to my students,

o   Setting clear expectations,

o   Understanding that literacy is key to overall success,

o   Using multiple instructional strategies, and

o   Building on a foundation of basics.

I have a genuine concern for the welfare of my students and I believe this characteristic is key if I am to become a good teacher.  I must want what is best for my students all of the time.  I will treat my students, as I would want a teacher to treat my own children.  My desired outcome will be an educational setting where the children will respect one another and the learning process.  Clear and attainable expectations are essential to an effective classroom if all children are to learn.  I will ensure that my students know exactly what is expected of them so that they can become successful learners and productive classroom citizens.  Literacy is the basis of a quality education.  Students will be judged successful if they have the ability to read on a proficient level, the ability to follow written instructions, and the ability to complete essential mathematical operations.  I will respect the learning needs of each child and incorporate methods of teaching which will maximize their learning opportunities.  I will utilize current research in multiple intelligences and in learning styles when designing my lessons so that students will be exposed to methodologies, which will have the greatest impact on their learning.  I will make activities fun, original, interesting, and memorable for my students.  I want their experiences to be not only educational, but also magical.

I have a serious commitment to be the best teacher for each group of students I am given the opportunity to teach.  I will work hard to be a positive influence in the lives of my students, their parents, and my fellow teachers.  It is my desire to assist students to achieve their fullest potential by providing an environment that is safe and invites a sharing of ideas.
